Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) Delta state chapter, Nigeria, is a non-governmental organization with headquarters in the United States of America, whose mandate is to educate youths on their rights.
Youth for Human Rights International Delta state chapter, took up the task at the polling unit at Uzoigwe primary school Asaba to advocate for peace in realizing articles 21(1) of the universal declaration of human rights. The article states that “everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives.
The team led by the executive director of Delta state chapter, Michael Onyarin, engaged members of the public and electorates on peace talks, and a good number of electorates in their hundreds volunteered to sign an autograph in support of peaceful elections which held on 9th of March 2019.
Over 200 people who pledged in support of peaceful, tolerance and violent-free elections, received some packages from YHRI containing the story of human rights as well as the 30 articles of the universal declaration of human right. The counter-terrorism unit (CTU) of the Nigeria police force also pledged to support peaceful elections in Nigeria.
Some of the youths indicated interest in joining the movement as they expressed satisfaction on the awareness to the public and recognition of their rights.
The elections have however ended in Delta state, and the process was assessed as peaceful throughout the state. Results are, however, being collated at the various collation centers across the state, as at the time of filing this report.
