When I was in school, not a week went by without being reminded that school is the key to success. I always struggled to come to terms with it because I considered school to be useless and as soon as I was done with matrix, I proved myself correct.
For 13 years, I went to school just to finish and get a slap in the face by reality. All the studying I did was for nothing because, despite all my hard work, I still could not do anything. In school, we were taught theory and algebra that was totally useless to me. The reality was that the more I went to school, the more I got brainwashed.
Schools kill dreams. The principal preached to us not to become singers and actors because there is no future in careers of that nature. At every assembly, we were told that without a degree, we would become nothing. There was never a single day that we were told that millions of graduates are in the streets of Africa with their degrees because they can’t find jobs.
The school will never tell learners that Jay Z became a billionaire because of hip hop music and most definitely will not want learners to find out that he never went to university or college. Schools don’t want learners to find out that Lupita Nyong’ o became a millionaire and a Hollywood bigshot from the streets of Africa.
Teachers look down on learners that are not very good in academics and often write them off. They go to the point of telling them that they will see them in the streets as soon as they’re done with school. Reality tells a different story because the majority of millionaires don’t have degrees.
The way teachers demand respect in school is like they don’t get paid and act like they care and want learners to pass, yet they strike during examinations and use the learners as bait.
Let’s be smart and make our own choices based on our hearts before it’s too late.
