Mr. X is a teacher in a government school. He and his wife wanted to have a son. They kept waiting, but they couldn’t get a son. However, his wife kept giving birth to a girl child. They didn’t want to go for abortion, so they had to accept the unwanted arrival of the girl child. His wife gave birth to eight girls, and after that only she gave birth to a son. Imagine what will be the condition of those girls who are accepted unwillingly. The way they will be raised will not be equal to the way the male child would be raised.
Another story is of a lady who used to live in my neighbourhood. She was well educated. After marriage, she gave birth to a girl child, and when her daughter became four years old, she conceived again. Her delivery was quite close when she and her family members asked her daughter if she wants to have a sister or brother. The daughter replied, “Sister.” They scolded her for willing to have a sister instead of brother.
The third story is of another lady I know who kept conceiving for a male child. She conceived for seven to eight times. Sometimes she gave birth to a dead male child, and other time she aborted when she came to know about the female child. She is pregnant again and expecting if she can get a male child. She has two daughters, but she and her husband both want a son.
The stories I have shared above are real-life stories, and these are only a few of them. One can find many more such stories. If we talk about the condition of women in our society, it is a bit better than before. Now females are getting an opportunity to study and pursue a career. We are living in an age where females are doing everything. They are adopting professions which were earlier considered risky for a female. In spite of all the restrictions society puts on them they are crossing all the hurdles. But even if there is an improvement, still there is a lot left to improve.
Till now in some families, the birth of a female child is not as welcoming as the birth of a male child. Till now, people’s obsession for the male child has not stopped.
