Technology is changing how we communicate

Trust me! Humans and animals are agents of communication; all living organisms have sourced a way of communicating with one another, either via verbal or non-verbal media. In the Stone Age, our forefathers tried to trek a long distance before communicating with one another. However, the 21st-century era has changed the narrative. Would you agree with me that if our fore-father resurrected today, the digitalised communication system would be magical and probably affect their sustainability?

Technological innovation has made it possible to the extent that one can easily converse with anyone in the world. Moreover, this is made possible due to the digitalised communication system. Do you agree that the required communication gadgets in the 21st century are: phones, tabs, laptops and a league of others? If yes, please read further!

Whether we agree or seek to disagree, everyone breathes and lives within the space of technologized communication, either by chatting, texting, video calling or telecommuting. In trade and commerce, technology has found its breathing space by channeling online transactions. Buyers and sellers don’t even have to see eye-to-eye before transactions are made! The likes of Jumia, Konga have brought the platform for online marketing into the limelight by affecting the sales of remote outlets. Now, do we believe that technology is changing the communication system?

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and a league of others have provided the opportunity to connect with family, friends, bosses and if you like, enemies, so we all stay in touch. There is a famous saying which goes thus, “20 boys cannot play for 20 ages”. I quite believe that! However, the continued increase in technology usage would somewhat make the saying unthinkable. This is because social media creates a connection where everyone maintains a cordial relationship. Also, these technological agents – that is, Facebook and the likes – have been promoting business online to reach out to a wide range of people. As of December 2018, statistics showed that 84.3 million people have access to the internet and use social media. As a result, it is indisputable that a large number of people can engage in business transactions in the digital space. That is perhaps the reason why Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram earn a certain amount of their profits by communicating with sellers and buyers through advertisement.

With the influence of technology in the 21st century, there seems to be a breach in the physical interaction between employers and employees. The working conducts have been codified such that everyone can telecommute freely and still keep in touch with all the practical working activities. With this, it could be argued that one does not necessarily need to have physical, verbal communication with one another when everything could be channelled via email. As telecommuting keeps expanding in this 21st century, some organisations like Fiverr and Upwork have provided online platforms where customers and clients can engage freely; earn money without seeing one another. Is this not incredible?
