The process in which the ubiquitous nature of the internet is utilized to link manufacturing systems, intelligent products and the human workforce providing a new level of product customization is proposed in industry 4.0.
There are four main drivers of industry 4.0 which include internet of things (IoT), industrial internet of things (IIoT), cloud-based manufacturing and smart manufacturing. This concept has completely revolutionized monitoring and control systems of industry and manufacturing processes. Hence, the concept of intelligent manufacturing is a crucial topic in today’s industry. It can transform any isolated and optimized production system into a fully integrated automated production flow.
Several activities characterise intelligent manufacturing which is centered around the internet of things and cyber-physical systems (CPS). Physical entities like machines are equipped with technologies such as radio frequency identification (RFID), sensors, microprocessors, and complete embedded systems. Furthermore, by creating a digital identity, a product that is in the process of being manufactured can carry its digital memory throughout the life cycle and can communicate with its environment.
RFID Technology when employed offers an intelligent method to manufacturing execution systems (MES) which is defined by the manufacturing enterprise solutions association (MESA). The application of RFID System can improve the efficiency of any shop floor, and reduce production time. It is a wireless communication technology used to capture data which may be linked to different identification attributes of entities carrying RFID tags. It has three main components: RFID tags fixed to entities with the electronic product code (EPC), RFID readers and RFID antennas. There are two types of RFID tags, passive and active tags. A passive RFID tag is powered by electromagnetic energy radiated from the reader antenna while active RFID tags are battery powered. Although active cards are more expensive than passive cards, they are becoming commonly used in the manufacturing industry.
To improve efficiency and to provide access to the real-time data irrespective of location, RFID technology is combined with IoT. Internet of things is the interconnectivity between various objects through the internet. The concept of the implementation of IoT in the industries has led to a new concept called industrial internet of things (IIoT). The integration of intelligent manufacturing systems with real-time sensing technologies with information and communication technologies has led to the concept of cloud manufacturing (CM). Cloud manufacturing creates a paradigm shift in manufacturing, from production-oriented to service –oriented. Moreover, as manufacturing becomes more complex and integrated, CM offers a solution that is capable of making intelligent decisions about the most robust manufacturing route.
Lots of decision making come with cloud manufacturing; machine learning is a good technology that can help CM more simplified and practicable. A combination of machine learning and cloud manufacturing would lead to a robust and adaptive intelligent manufacturing system.
The advantages of deep learning over traditional manufacturing technologies cannot be overemphasized. With the widespread deployment of sensors and IoT, deep learning provides advanced analytical tools for processing manufacturing.
