Seven things that can make people like you

It is a natural desire to want to be loved, welcomed or held at high esteem by our peers, schoolmates, colleagues or business associates. Therefore, it is excruciating if you are not accepted despite your efforts to be liked. Let’s consider seven things you can do to be loved by most people.

Like yourself: It is not possible for everyone to like you. There are people you do not like as well. So, rather than overwork yourself trying to win everybody you encounter, learn to appreciate yourself for who you are. If you don’t have self-esteem, you will be relying on the approval of others to make you feel good about yourself, and if such consent does not come, you might feel terrible. But, if you feel good about yourself, you can overcome such rejections and move on with your life.

Take the initiative: If you want people to like you, why not like them first. It is risky and scary to approach people you are not very familiar with especially if you are a shy person. Some may not respond favourably to your effort to establish a friendship, but most people will. Before long, you will have many people that want to be with you.

Personal hygiene: Nobody will like to hang around someone emitting an offensive odour. So, take care of yourself by bathing, brushing your teeth and donning clean clothes. Avoid some practices that might irritate people around you, such as poking your fingers into your nose, spitting repeatedly or not washing your hands after using the toilet.

Develop good conversational manners: People who can converse comfortably with others will be like than those who do not have excellent conversational skills. What do you need to do? Don’t dominate conversations or interrupt when others are speaking. Disagree respectfully and listen with your heart when others are talking. Don’t bore people talking too much about yourself, your family or your accomplishments. Be knowledgeable on a variety of topics so you can have something to contribute when various issues come up.

Be careful how you respond to questions. If you only respond yes or no to issues that need more elaborate answers people will conclude that they might be disturbing you, so they will avoid you.

Be generous: Being generous is a quality that attracts everyone. Remember, giving is not always about money or other material things. Someone, who has money, may need advice, encouragement, or an ear to listen to him. So, try to have time for other people despite your tight schedules.

Be appreciative: You also need to appreciate whatever others do for you. No matter how small, be generous with showing appreciation. When people see you as an appreciative person, they will not only want to be generous towards you they will want to be your friend for life.
