The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria speaks on the postponement of the Saturday’s presidential and national assembly elections. The election, which was schedule for Saturday, 16th February, 2019 has been postponed by a week to Saturday, 23rd February, 2019.
The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, after an extensive meeting with twelve national commissioners, confirmed that the decision to postpone the election was taken due to the crucial factors that may impede the success of the election.
As learnt from several sources close to the electoral commission, the postponement is attributed to the logistics challenges faced by the commission in a lot of states in Nigeria.
Moreover, INEC also faced a lot of predicaments distributing sensitive electoral materials to some states within the country. It was rumored that some electoral material were destroyed in some of the state.
All this and more has culminated to the postponement of the election and allow the commission some time to put things in place to ensure successful election.
