What is Jio fibre?
India is a very explosive market when it comes to the telecommunications industry. With an ever-growing population, particularly the youth, providing a high demand yielding market, all telecom companies stand to make huge profits by tapping into this pool. According to a report by the Boston Consulting Group, the video-on-demand market in India could leap to $5 billion by 2023 from $500 million last year. It has also been estimated that paying subscribers will rise to as many as 50 million, while advertising-supported video-on-demand will reach a whopping 600 million users by next year.
What are its features?
Reliance Jio has been in the news for all the right reasons. The telecom arm of the Reliance Industries, under the able leadership of the twins Akash and Isha Ambani, has been successful in tapping the telecom potential of India. Along these lines, the company announced the commercial launch of JioFibre, a fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) service, on August 12th, 2019. The service will be made available across 1,600 cities and towns, targeting approximately 20 million homes over the next 12 months. Initially known as Jio Gigafibre (2018), the internet broadband service was later renamed as Jiofibre.
Some of the promised features as part of the service are as follows:
1. Ultra-high-speed broadband (up to 1 Gbps).
2. Free domestic voice calling (on landline connections), conferencing and international calling.
3. TV video calling and conferencing.
4. Entertainment OTT apps.
5. Gaming and VR experience.
6. Home networking.
7. Device security.
8. Premium content platform.
9. Free set-top-box built-in with Jio apps
10. Free 4K LED TV (for gold plan and above)
How will it change the telecom sector?
Reliance Jio has already taken the market by storm with its broadband connection plans and JioFibre will prove to be no different. By providing STB’s and high definition TV’s free of cost, the telecom giant is all set to change the trajectory of the telecom market in India. Further, by offering innovative services like the ‘first-day first show’ option and the video calling option within the purview of the subscription plan, the service is a competition to almost all companies in the market providing any source of broadband and entertainment services. There is also a possibility for Jio to start producing its own content which will make it the first independent content producing broadband service in the country.
