If wishes were horses

“If wishes were horses”, the statement is incomplete. In its complete form, it is classed as an aphorism. Whenever this statement is uttered, a deep sigh will likely follow. It is a wild thought beyond our reach.

When one must have gone through life, and it seems as though the more you try, the less you see, and as your thoughts run wild you will console yourself with “if wishes were horses”. As you bend your knees in prayer daily hoping for the best in all of life’s trials and yet the mountain remains unmoved, and as you wish you could do something about it, then the thought will come; “if wishes were horses”.

Who is there that has not had loads of wishes in their minds and upon their lips? Certainly, no one! Even the rich also do make wishes and will wish that the wish came to be. Wishes are readily there for us to take hold of. While some wishes are beyond possibility, yet there are wishes that we would wish were granted us.

We won’t fail to recall how we uttered wishes on our birthdays as we sliced the knife through the cake. But consider this; if wishes were granted at every request (remember Cinderella – “Beauty and the beast”?), would we have had space left for us to live on in our tiny earth? No way! Chaos! Chaos! Chaos!

As good as wishes do sound, they are weak. Note here, a wish isn’t a prophecy. A wish warms our heart and affords us self-pity because it informs us we do know what we should get but that we do not have it/them with us. “If wishes were horses, even beggars would ride.” Yes, with wishes being fulfilled at every instant it would then mean that there will be no need to labour and take actions.

Victories would be purely effortless; money would grow on trees; men would transport themselves to outer space without the rocket; nothing would be impossible with man. But let’s turn it around. The possibility already expressed in a wish should be a source of inspiration to keep doing what can guarantee the desire in the wish.

When wishes become ideas, ideas will inspire action, and a well-crafted and executed action will turn a wish into a reality. You may be granted your wish, you never can tell. So, wish for the best and go after it!
