Domestic violence – Damsel in distress

Devotion to a family of her own,
Is a lady trait.
When she takes the hand of a man,
And says, I do,
Safe heaven, she thought,
Wrapping her fingers around his,
So tight,
Looking up at him,
With eyes wet and sparkling.
The journey ahead frightened her.
Her carefree days have gone by,
But she loved him, and that was enough.

Even though he was too old for her,
Or his nose too big,
And his beard never trimmed to perfection,
He was dashing to her,
Not because he had the money,
But because she was a woman now,
Who had to honour her man.

A woman’s love has its facets;
respect, loyalty, patience,
and above all
Sacrifice!

He caressed her, consumed her,
She gave it all to him,
She gave birth to his child, his blood,
At the cost of her own body.
She had stretch marks on her belly now,
She had put on some weight,
The tiny little human who suckled her breasts,
Meant the world to her.

She couldn’t leave his side.
Was it her fault?
To hear him call her fat and ugly.
Comparing her to women on television,
on billboards and on the sidewalk.
And call her lazy.
He now bruised and devoured her,
Verbally attacked and scarred her.

Displaying his strength and superiority over her.
She bears it all, the pain.
But yet at night, she was a little girl.
Holding on to her blanket so tightly,
She would cry her heart out.
She wanted to run away, to disappear,
Or worse, to cease to exist.
But the baby, her angel was in his sweet slumber,
He gave her strength, purpose, and peace,
And she chose to stay again.

But my darling girl,
Your angel will understand,
That you alone are enough.
You are brave my girl,
You lived with the beast,
So let go,
And choose yourself.

You deserve the world and more.
Love may find you one day,
A love that sets you free,
A love that reciprocates your energy,
And if it doesn’t find its way,
You still have yourself.

Be kind to yourself,
Be fierce my girl,
You are your own saviour,
You are enough.
